Jane’s Walk is an annual festival of free citizen-led walking conversations inspired by Jane Jacobs. On the first weekend of May every year, Jane’s Walk festivals take place in hundreds of cities across the globe. Jane’s Walks encourage people to share stories about their neighbourhoods, discover unseen aspects of their communities, and use walking as a way to connect with their neighbours. Background: Created in 2007 in Toronto by friends of the urban thinker Jane Jacobs, the annual series of free, volunteer-led urban walks has grown from 27 to over 500 walks, from Calgary to Canberra and Sao Paulo to Saskatoon. Jane Jacobs (1916-2006) was an urbanist and activist whose writings championed a fresh, community-based approach to city building. Jacobs saw cities as ecosystems that had their own logic and dynamism which would change over time according to how they were used. Jane’s Walks are meant to be fun, engaging and participatory – everyone has a story and they are usually keen to share it! 2021 is the fifteenth anniversary of Jane’s Walk. Jane’s Walk in Camrose is being coordinated by the City’s Planning Department and Walkable Camrose made up of community volunteers and staff of supportive organizations.
