This year’s Remembrance Day Double Feature will showcase “Casablanca,” a 1942 American romantic drama film starring Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Bergman and Paul Henreid, in one of the most enduring romances in movie history. Filmed and set during World War II, it focuses on an American expatriate, Rick Blaine (Bogart), who must choose between his love for a woman, Ilsa Lund (Bergman), and helping her husband, Victor Laslo (Henreid), a Czechoslovak resistance leader, escape from the Vichy-controlled city of Casablanca to continue his fight against the Nazis.
The film showing will be accompanied by a showing of “Casablanca: An Unlikely Classic,” a documentary detailing the challenges the cast and crew experienced during production. Whether it was a spat between director Michael Curtiz and star Humphrey Bogart, or the difficulty the writers faced in establishing the proper ending, the timeless classic closely avoided disaster. Featuring commentary from film industry greats: directors Steven Spielberg, William Friedkin, and others, confirm how influential the film has become in terms of editing, dialogue, lighting, and costume design.
